Job changes are part of every career today. More than 60 percent of all employees change jobs one to five times in the course of their career. In order for the career change to succeed, however, you should be able to justify changing of jobs.
Don’t change Job without a reason
As natural as occasional job changes are today in most, you need a good explanation and justification. Not only for changing job but even when you apply.
In this context, many employers look forward to a motivational change and an alternative projection to expand certain horizon in their company or organisation. Especially, when there is too much room or suspicion that a candidate is ahead of a termination.
Likewise, in order to avoid such a disruptive feeling and over expectation, you must justify the change of job. The art of this explanation is to answer three basic questions:
- What is your motivation for the change?
- What is it that appeals to you about the advertised position (of a job opening)?
- Why do you want to stay (longer) in your new job?
You should absolutely avoid justifications. Your attitude is a positive outlook on the future. It is also wrong to speak badly about previous employers.
Even if your employer ask and follow up on motivation to change: justify the change of job, but not yourself! Otherwise, that sounds suspiciously like a guilty conscience and a fractured statement.
In particular, the anticipated apology (if it has not yet been asked) wakes sleeping dogs.
The motivation to change
Whether a career change is successful depends crucially on the drive we act from. Motivation means “movement”. Here are two directions in the motivation to change:
Getting away from something:
Do you want to “get away from something?”, away from an undesirable situation, a bad job or a bad boss.
However, there is usually an escape reflex behind this. Taking the run out can also be a convenient dodging and a nonstrategic approach. The main thing you get away from that something!
Moving Forward (Increasing):
Those who, on the other hand, “orientate themselves“ somewhere ”usually follow a plan or strategy – and promptly look determined. With the moving forward motivation , we want to achieve something, increase, develop towards a set goal and have a clear view of where the path should lead you.
Reasons for changing jobs: clear goals and open words
Job changes are successful when you pursue a clear goal. If, on the other hand, you try to avoid problems or even take a flight forward, you will find it difficult to justify this positively or even convincingly. Even if frustration and dissatisfaction are your primary reasons for changing jobs, you definitely shouldn’t say that. Rather, your focus should always be forward and on the positive aspects of the new job. A typical formulation could then sound like this:
The change to this position and your company gives me the opportunity to develop myself personally and to use my expanded skills profitably for you. The career prospects offered fit perfectly with my plans and ambitions. In the advertised position, I see not only a meaningful and demanding task, but also good development opportunities that match my abilities.
However, the formulation is still quite general. You should adapt this personally for your purpose and specify the declaration individually. Formulated in this way, your employer may surely ask again what exactly your plans and ambitions are and what development opportunities you are hoping for. In addition, this justification only makes sense if:
- You actually want to develop yourself and know how.
- the advertised position also offers this perspective.
- the job actually matches your skills.
